"I was never going to amount to much anyway, but now, statistically speaking, there's a better chance that some part of me will go on to greatness somewhere in the world. I'd rather be partly great than entirely useless." -Samson Ward
How much brainwashing do you think has happened for teenagers to make this sort of claim as they’re being led to their "death"?
A lot since they have been convinced to be still alive but living in a divided state.
Why, do you think, has Shusterman chosen to have three characters tell their story?
Why, do you think, has Shusterman chosen to have three characters tell their story?
He chose to have three characters that have different backgrounds to get three different points of views. Connor, being an unwind due to the reason of him misbehaving. Risa the perfect unfostered child that still got chosen to be an unwind due to people thinking she reached her potential. Lev the child who knows he's getting unwind and believes it right because it was written in the bible.
Lev is a tithe. This means that he is the 10% that his family will give back to the church as an offering. What are your thoughts on this?
Coming from a Christian point of view, I don't think it's right to sacrifice a child as an offering for the church. Number three of the ten commandments is "Thou shalt not kill" and offering your child is basically giving your child for you someone to kill which make you an accomplice.
Rita is a state home kid - she was unwanted at birth, and now the state has decided she is no longer useful. Do you think that the state should ever be able to determine if one life is more useful than another?
The state should never get to determine if a persons life is more useful than the other, everyone was made to have an impact on the earth, they don't have the right to rate and compare people's live, it is theirs and they should be the only one who can determine if it's useful or not.
Connor's parents have chosen to unwind him due to his difficult behaviour. They have then booked a ticket to the Bahamas. In your opinion, how do parents view their children? Why do you think this?
Parents view their children as an appliance that they use to entertain them once it's faulty they dispose of it to get detached. The parents wanted to have kids to entertain them, watching them grow up, being cute, and showing affection but once they reached the age when their behaviours start to get difficult they decide to unwind their child (Connor).
Pastor Dan presents as being conflicted. What reasons might he have to encourage Lev in his journey as a tithe?
He knew deep in his heart that what Lev's parents are doing is wrong, he might've believed that no kid should be sacrificed and the tithing ritual is nonsense.
Why does he encourage him to run? He wants to prevent Lev from getting unwind.
What is the story based on a nursery rhyme that circulates among the youth?
Humphrey Dunfee an urban legend created to spook children. The story is about Humphrey's parents feeling remorse about unwinding him so they decided to put him back together by finding pieces of him.
