Legality vs Morality

Legality vs Morality

Is it better to harm one person but save more people or is it better to save one and harm many? If you were asked if it's better to sacrifice one to save more, the logical answer is to hurt that one person to save more people but is that an ethical thing to do? This question can be applied in many situations. For example, you were a driver of a trolley car, your trolley car is operating at sixty miles per hour, your brake isn't functioning, however, your steering wheel is, in front of you are five workers and on the side track is one worker working on the track, would you steer onto the side track to save the five or remain going straight to crashing into the 5 workers?

In my opinion, this is a lose-lose situation, at the end of the day someone had to be sacrifice and neither of those choices are ethical. Though if I really had to choose, I would sacrifice the one to save more people, killing the five, will affect more people including their family.

Part Seven-Consciousness

How is it that Connor was not unwound? p318
He adopted a new persona, a nineteen-year-old guard named E. Robert Mullard that prevented him from getting unwind after getting into an accident with the clappers.
Whose arm does he now have? P319
He inherited the arm of Roland.

On p321 Risa tells Connor how she won't be unwound. Do you think her decision to not accept the spine of an Unwind was purely ethical, or was she also playing the system in order to stay alive?
I think she chose not to because she knows what it feels like to be an unwind but at the same time, she chose not to so she doesn't get unwind herself.

Since the explosions at Happy Jack, what have people been doing? What has Cy-Fi's role been in this? P325
Cy-Fi started to speak up, to give the unwinds a voice, educating people that unwinding is a wrong thing. People also are waking up and protesting against unwinding, resulting to lowering the age to seventeen.

Lev's parents disown him. Who is trying to become his guardian? Lev's brother Marcus is trying to get Lev's parenting consent.

Why has Pastor Dan resigned? P329
Pastor Dan visited Lev in a way to apologise for tricking Lev into tithing hence why he resigned to not lead any other children into tithing. He decided to believe in another God that doesn't allow tithing.

P331-332 explain what has happened to Harlan Dunfee. What do you think about the Admiral and his wife's plan? The Admiral and his wife threw a party gathering everyone who had Harlan Dunfee's part together in memory of Harlan. They had nametags, not for their names but for the part they got from Harlan. I think this is a genius way of reuniting with an unwound children in a non-violent way.

Was it what you expected?
I expected them to gather all the people and harvest back Harlan Dunfee's parts to bring him back to life, like the story.

Who takes over the graveyard? P331
Since the general's health is declining and couldn't take to lead the graveyard anymore, Connor stepped up and took over.

PREDICTION: there are three more books after this. What do you think might happen to Risa, Connor and Lev? Any other characters you would like make a prediction for?
I think Connor is going to continue to help at the graveyard to save more unwinds and Risa helping there as a medic. I also predict that Cy-fi and Lev are going to reunite and speak up for the unwinds until they abolish the unwinding law.

Graveyard

Graveyard

Which job in the graveyard does Risa get assigned to? How does this come about? P201
Risa originally got the job for washing dishes however when she across a kid that Connor punched she taught him how to stem the flow of the blood impressing Starboard promoting her to medic immediately.

Why doesn't Connor volunteer for "work"? P205

He figured that the Admiral was using the unwound to makes money.

How does Roland unsettle Connor? P206-207
Roland had Connor thinking that the Admiral has a different agenda for the children. He convinced Connor that the admiral takes different parts on an unwind for himself like his brand new looking teeth that looks like it doesn't belong to his saggy body.

P208-209 detail Lev's arrival, and Connor's reaction. Make sure you fill in your character profiles for both characters.

Lev's arrival was the same process as every unwind kid there, they arrive from a fed-ex aeroplane and the admiral's assistants orders them to line up to take them to the supply jet.

Connor had mixed emotions when he saw Lev, he didn't know whether to feel delighted and relieved or angry.

P214-215 Connor learns the truth about the Admiral here. How does the Admiral gain Connor's trust?

The admiral knew Connor has suspicions towards him so he called Connor to talk to him. When Connor's and the Admiral's conversation was escalating, Connor accidentally lets out why he thinks how the Admiral's get his teeth from. Once the Admirals heard Connor's stupid suspicion he decided to explain to him about his teeth being dentures and working the kids to pay off the food.

What, according to the Admiral, is it that Connor is becoming famous for in the Graveyard?p212
Connor was known for being tough before arriving at the graveyard so he was popular before then but he got more popular for being good at repairing and known for getting to a lot of fights.

What happens to the Goldens?p217
All five of them suffocated and died inside the crate. They believe someone targeted the five kids in purpose to get power and rise to the top since all of them are the strongest out of all the kids that boarded that plane. Connor had a feeling it's Roland since he wants to be the alpha.

How does Roland begin to assert his power in the Graveyard? (you'll need to look throughout the section)
Roland is starting to spread rumours about the Admiral to turn on him so he can win them to create his own army.

P222-226 give us an insight into how the Unwinding Bill was passed into law. Summarise what happened, then explain whether or not you think it is plausible. Most people thought that there were only two sides fighting in the Heartland War (pro-life and pro-choice) but there's another side in the middle that wants to prevent both sides to clash this consisted of people from the military. The bill of life started off a joke until a scientist won a Nobel price for perfecting Neurografting. Neurografting is a process of allowing every part of a donor to be used for transplant. The side in the middle got inspired by it and had suggested getting rid of unwanted children, eventually, both sides agreed to create the law of unwinding.

The Admiral was there when the Bill of Life was signed - do you think this detracts from the believability of the commonplace nature of Unwinding? In your opinion, do you think the book should have a few more generations between those who signed the Bill,

Yes so we could see different points of views and hear different opinions and thoughts about it rather than just one.

and the present state in the novel?
What job does Lev volunteer to do? P236

Lev volunteered to fix oil pipeline at Prudhoe Bay, Alaska until his eighteen along with the troublesome people in his group leaving Risa more worried and curious about Lev.

Which part of Harlan Dunfree does Emby have? P240

Emby inherited the lungs of Harlan Dunfree giving him asthma.

Chapter 39 is from Roland's point of view. Why do you think Shusterman changes the narrative here? What do we learn in this short chapter
?
To reveal Roland's plan and reasoning behind his suspicious behaviours.

By the end of this section, things at the Graveyard have deteriorated, with the unwinds turning on the Admiral, and tearing the place apart. Which character is beaten to death on p250?
Connor saw the mob kicking something in the centre but turns out it was someone and it was Cleaver covered in blood and bruises. Connor decided to help him but Cleaver seemed to enjoy the chaos unfolding the murderer of the Golden's.

What does the Admiral refuse on p255? What is the doctor's reaction to this?

He refuses to get a transplant since the organs in the hospital are from unwound children. The doctor was confused and hesitant trying to convince the Admiral to get a transplant to increase his chance of survival.
Why does Roland have the Juvey-Cops called? P259 Why doesn't his plan happen? P260-1
Roland asked the Doctor to call the Juvey-Cop to turn Connor and Risa in and in order to save himself from getting unwound his plan is to also lead the Juvey-Cop to the graveyard getting hundreds of unwind kids to get unwound in exchange of money. Roland's plan backfired when he found out that the cop already knew about the graveyard. The Juvey-Cops lets the Admiral continue on his unwind graveyard camp to get unwind off the street.

Destination

Part Four-Destinations

This section opens with Lev in a pawnbroker's. What does this tell you about how his character is changing?
Lev is starting to gain more confidence making him come across as fearless and intelligent when bribing adults. He also is getting better at making decisions when trying to elaborate a plan.

While being transported to possible safety, some of the kids on the run wonder, "Would it be better to die or be unwound?" If given the choice, which would you choose? Why? This response requires more than one or two sentences! Put forward at least three reasons why you think what you do.

I'd rather die than to be unwound, at least I died knowing no one wanted to sacrifice me for someone else's sake, making me feel loved. Another reason is I don't want to lose to the government who "unwound" (kill) helpless teenagers for being teenagers. If they do harvest my organs, it may help people in need but a part of me would still be in that organ that would just cause more trouble to the person it got lent to.

Another question the kids in the book discuss is, "If every part of you is still alive but inside someone else, are you alive or are you dead?" They also wonder if consciousness can exist even if it's spread out and if the soul remains intact. What do you think? Read Thomas Hobbes' Ship of Theseus puzzle to help you make a decision. Be sure to reference it in your answer!http://metaphysicist.com/puzzles/ship_theseus/

I think that you're still alive but alive in different people where you can control a different part of them. Like Tyler, even if he's dead he can still control Cy-Fi's brain and tell him what to do without Cy-Fi's consciousness.

This section of the novel sees Lev and Cy-Fi finally make it to Joplin. As they get closer, Cy-Fi's behaviour becomes increasingly erratic. What are some of the things he does, or things he likes, that are not his own behaviours or memories?
Cy-Fi was starting to twitch uncontrollably as if Tyler (The uwound that gave Ci-fy a part of his brain) was trying to possess him. Unlike Cy-Fi he wasn't as confident when leading the way or giving advice he seemed quieter and he dropped the accent. Tyler's noticeable trait, being a kleptomaniac was taking over Cy-Fi's big personality driving him to steal anything he finds shiny and expensive.

What was Cy-Ty hiding in his backyard? Pg 185-194

He was hiding a collection of shiny and expensive things that he stole in the past.

The section ends with Cy-Ty reaching his destination. What do you think of his parents' behaviour? What does Lev's support show you about his character?

Tyler's parent's behaviour was completely understandable. Even if they're not seeing their actual son, a part of him still lives inside Cy-Fi, like seeing a ghost of their son possessing another person's body to haunt them.

The following is a response from eBay with regard to a seller's attempt to auction his soul online in 2001.
Thank you for taking the time to write eBay with your concerns. I'm happy to help you further.
If the soul does not exist, eBay could not allow the auctioning of the soul because there would be nothing to sell. However, if the soul does exist, then in accordance with eBay's policy on human parts and remains we would not allow the auctioning of human souls. The soul would be considered human remains; and although it is not specifically stated on the policy page, human souls are still not allowed to be listen on eBay. Your auction was removed appropriately, and will not be reinstated. Please do not relist this item with us in the future.
You may review our policy at the following link:
It is my pleasure to assist you. Thank you for choosing eBay.

Activity: In pairs, come up with a new way that your soul could be kept. For example, in Phillip Pullman's Dark Materials series, souls are daemons and take the form of animals. They live alongside their person. Can you devise an interesting way that your soul might become detached, or kept safe?

My partner has discussed and had an idea that souls are kept safe in heaven until it's time for it to come back on earth to be reborn and live life until it's time for them to die and the cycle repeats over again.

Part Three-Transit

Transit

In the course of the book, Connor and Risa get separated from Lev, who travels for a time with another character. Why do you think Shusterman chose to split the narrative into two distinct threads? The reason why Shusterman decided to separate Lev to Risa and Connor is to introduce a new character that would tell a new point of view to the story. What do you think this achieves? This gives a different perspective on unwinding due to Cy-Fi ( A kid who got donated an organ that came from an unwound child.). That shows us readers how children that aren't getting unwound can still be affected by the unwinding laws. How does this affect the evolution of the characters? Lev can learn a lot from Cy-Fi considering he lectures Lev about everything he knows and talks nonstop. Cy-Fi is also very intelligent and has very different values and beliefs from Lev which can work to their advantage when understanding where they're both coming from (for example gay marriage, Cy-Fi being totally normal with it since he grew up having two dads and Lev not being used to it since it conflicts with his religion).

On p125 & 129  the novel touches on same-sex relationships. Has the attitude toward same-sex couples changed (for better or worse) in this futuristic society? Explain your response.  The same-sex couples changed for the worse since the Heartland war illegalised same-sex marriage making it harder for same-sex couples to be more acceptable being with each other.

P130 begins our journey into understanding a little more about Cy-Fi. Through his character, what do you learn about the effects of unwinding on both the donor and receiver?  People who receive an organ from an unwound adapt to their characteristics and personality, skills and even their memories. As if the unwound is stuck on the person's body that would have episodes of it popping up.

What is the real reason Cy-Fi need to get to Joplin, Mo? Pg 131
He wanted to go where his donor lived to fix it's unresolved problem back home.

What is the significance of Connor holding in his anger around Roland? Pg 147
He doesn't want to be a bait for Roland despite the fact he really wants to fight Roland, Roland is going to end up killing him.
Connor's anger and lack of impulse control is often a problem for him until he learns to control and channel his emotions. Do you ever feel like your impulses are stronger than your will? There are situations where my emotion drives my decision leading to impulsive decisions but most of the time I try to think things through.
What strategies do you use to control your feelings? Slow things down and think of the consequences of my decisions before actually making them.
Do they work? Sometimes they work sometimes they don't depend on how strong my emotions are.

Storked- Connections Tasks

Storked- Connections Tasks

Connection 1: The Baby Box
Baby box in Germany

The baby boxes are insulated boxes that have a warm blanket and an envelop inside that has contacts of people to call in case the parents change their minds, the people working there monitors the "baby box" and get a notification if the box is being opened and the box immediately gets locked, the hatch is where parents can dump their unwanted baby to get adopted. It has spread around Europe and the United States with 200 boxes in total. This practice has been done before in medieval Europe where you can get rid of your child and the hospital fosters them using the community's money.

Connection 2: The Underground Railroad

The Undeground Railroad is a secret association that began in the 1780s where they freed approximately 6000 slaves. Their code names such as "conductor", "lighthouse", "stations", "depot" and "stationmasters" our themes regarding train stations. Most "conductors" pretended to be a slave where they would travel to plantations to lead fugitives to safe houses known as "stations". Harriett Tubman was a former slave that has been saved by the Underground Railroad that later became one of the most well known "conductor" saving 300 slaves in a decade of her serving. The Underground Railroad activities ended when the Civil War began in 1862.

          Connection 3: Suicide Bombers
https://www.bbc.com/news/av/world-middle-east-37216876/yemen-hit-by-suicide-bombing-carnage-in-aden

Like the "clappers" (terrorist group)  in Unwind, they replace their blood with nitroglycerin blend to make it explode like a bomb, setting it off by clapping blowing themselves up and everyone around them, a terrorist bombed a headquarter of a pro-government militia killing 60 people in Yemen by slamming a car into the building killing themselves in the process.
