SEEL Paragraph

“The Right to Education.Third world countries like Somalia Sudan, Pakistan, Afghanistan and many more still don’t abide the Human Rights law in this modern day society when it comes to child labour, taking away education from 200 million children all over the globe ranging from 5 to 17 years old. Poor families that live in poverty often owes a debt forcing their children to work at a very young age. So parents usually don’t have a choice but to deprive their child of their education, exchanging their children’s future for the debt. Most children work in industries of agriculture (working with plants), services(hotel, restaurant waiters), fishing, construction, mining, manufacturing and even dangerous jobs like mining. Famous brand companies you see today in your local supermarket often have child labourers behind them, they get their resources from suppliers that have young slaves working for them. No matter how hard a slave works they don’t get money in return, they only get provided food, water, and shelter and the only way to get out is to pay off the debt or escape. The Human Rights Law has been around for centuries yet many countries pretend that it doesn’t exist exploiting children to grow financially not caring about the future of there country’s economy.

Destination

Part Four-Destinations

This section opens with Lev in a pawnbroker's. What does this tell you about how his character is changing?
Lev is starting to gain more confidence making him come across as fearless and intelligent when bribing adults. He also is getting better at making decisions when trying to elaborate a plan.

While being transported to possible safety, some of the kids on the run wonder, "Would it be better to die or be unwound?" If given the choice, which would you choose? Why? This response requires more than one or two sentences! Put forward at least three reasons why you think what you do.

I'd rather die than to be unwound, at least I died knowing no one wanted to sacrifice me for someone else's sake, making me feel loved. Another reason is I don't want to lose to the government who "unwound" (kill) helpless teenagers for being teenagers. If they do harvest my organs, it may help people in need but a part of me would still be in that organ that would just cause more trouble to the person it got lent to.

Another question the kids in the book discuss is, "If every part of you is still alive but inside someone else, are you alive or are you dead?" They also wonder if consciousness can exist even if it's spread out and if the soul remains intact. What do you think? Read Thomas Hobbes' Ship of Theseus puzzle to help you make a decision. Be sure to reference it in your answer!http://metaphysicist.com/puzzles/ship_theseus/

I think that you're still alive but alive in different people where you can control a different part of them. Like Tyler, even if he's dead he can still control Cy-Fi's brain and tell him what to do without Cy-Fi's consciousness.

This section of the novel sees Lev and Cy-Fi finally make it to Joplin. As they get closer, Cy-Fi's behaviour becomes increasingly erratic. What are some of the things he does, or things he likes, that are not his own behaviours or memories?
Cy-Fi was starting to twitch uncontrollably as if Tyler (The uwound that gave Ci-fy a part of his brain) was trying to possess him. Unlike Cy-Fi he wasn't as confident when leading the way or giving advice he seemed quieter and he dropped the accent. Tyler's noticeable trait, being a kleptomaniac was taking over Cy-Fi's big personality driving him to steal anything he finds shiny and expensive.

What was Cy-Ty hiding in his backyard? Pg 185-194

He was hiding a collection of shiny and expensive things that he stole in the past.

The section ends with Cy-Ty reaching his destination. What do you think of his parents' behaviour? What does Lev's support show you about his character?

Tyler's parent's behaviour was completely understandable. Even if they're not seeing their actual son, a part of him still lives inside Cy-Fi, like seeing a ghost of their son possessing another person's body to haunt them.

The following is a response from eBay with regard to a seller's attempt to auction his soul online in 2001.
Thank you for taking the time to write eBay with your concerns. I'm happy to help you further.
If the soul does not exist, eBay could not allow the auctioning of the soul because there would be nothing to sell. However, if the soul does exist, then in accordance with eBay's policy on human parts and remains we would not allow the auctioning of human souls. The soul would be considered human remains; and although it is not specifically stated on the policy page, human souls are still not allowed to be listen on eBay. Your auction was removed appropriately, and will not be reinstated. Please do not relist this item with us in the future.
You may review our policy at the following link:
It is my pleasure to assist you. Thank you for choosing eBay.

Activity: In pairs, come up with a new way that your soul could be kept. For example, in Phillip Pullman's Dark Materials series, souls are daemons and take the form of animals. They live alongside their person. Can you devise an interesting way that your soul might become detached, or kept safe?

My partner has discussed and had an idea that souls are kept safe in heaven until it's time for it to come back on earth to be reborn and live life until it's time for them to die and the cycle repeats over again.

Health

Sharing your learning- Blogs
We are staring Health off by learning about our Taha Wairua (Spiritual Wellbeing) and making ourselves more familiar with our values and beliefs and realize what makes us who we are and attributes to know our identity.

Spiritual wellbeing is what makes you who you are (identity). Things that make up your identity aren't just your religion but your values, beliefs, attributes, ethnicity, name, goals, and many more. Things I learnt are my identity, what makes me who I am and learning the importance of it.

PVA- EXERCISE #1

FROM THE VALUES YOU CHOSE, WRITE ABOUT THE TWO THAT ARE MOST IMPORTANT TO YOU
 Humour/Fun  and  Family
WHY IS THIS VALUE IMPORTANT TO YOU?
I think humour and fun are essential to life, without it life would just be plain and boring.
My family has been there all throughout my life and they're the one that I seek for when I need help and support.
RECALL A MOMENT IN YOUR LIFE WHEN YOU REALLY ‘LIVED’ THIS VALUE.
Every time I'm with my friends and family. ( Humour/Fun )
Whenever I'm with my family or back home in the Philippines. (Family)

IF THIS VALUE IS NOT BEING RESPECTED BY OTHERS, HOW MIGHT YOU FEEL OR REACT?
I would feel bad due to them feeling that people shouldn't have fun but to be sad if they're not feeling well themselves.. ( Humour/Fun )
If my family is being disrespected I would feel very offended and annoyed, I'd rather be made fun of instead of my family getting disrespected. (Family)

Lino print- Andy Warhol

Which bird did you choose?
Mohua

Describe stylisation and positive/negative space in your work.
My negative spaces are the features of the bird like the beak, eyes, and tail and my positive spaces are the backgrounds (this is the part that I cut).

What ideas do you have for your orphist circle layers?
I thinking of layering the circle to draw the eyes of the people toward the bird.

What colours have you chosen for your layers why?
I've decided to do black, red, and blue since I see these colour patterns a lot and I find it aesthetically pleasing.

Part Three-Transit

Transit

In the course of the book, Connor and Risa get separated from Lev, who travels for a time with another character. Why do you think Shusterman chose to split the narrative into two distinct threads? The reason why Shusterman decided to separate Lev to Risa and Connor is to introduce a new character that would tell a new point of view to the story. What do you think this achieves? This gives a different perspective on unwinding due to Cy-Fi ( A kid who got donated an organ that came from an unwound child.). That shows us readers how children that aren't getting unwound can still be affected by the unwinding laws. How does this affect the evolution of the characters? Lev can learn a lot from Cy-Fi considering he lectures Lev about everything he knows and talks nonstop. Cy-Fi is also very intelligent and has very different values and beliefs from Lev which can work to their advantage when understanding where they're both coming from (for example gay marriage, Cy-Fi being totally normal with it since he grew up having two dads and Lev not being used to it since it conflicts with his religion).

On p125 & 129  the novel touches on same-sex relationships. Has the attitude toward same-sex couples changed (for better or worse) in this futuristic society? Explain your response.  The same-sex couples changed for the worse since the Heartland war illegalised same-sex marriage making it harder for same-sex couples to be more acceptable being with each other.

P130 begins our journey into understanding a little more about Cy-Fi. Through his character, what do you learn about the effects of unwinding on both the donor and receiver?  People who receive an organ from an unwound adapt to their characteristics and personality, skills and even their memories. As if the unwound is stuck on the person's body that would have episodes of it popping up.

What is the real reason Cy-Fi need to get to Joplin, Mo? Pg 131
He wanted to go where his donor lived to fix it's unresolved problem back home.

What is the significance of Connor holding in his anger around Roland? Pg 147
He doesn't want to be a bait for Roland despite the fact he really wants to fight Roland, Roland is going to end up killing him.
Connor's anger and lack of impulse control is often a problem for him until he learns to control and channel his emotions. Do you ever feel like your impulses are stronger than your will? There are situations where my emotion drives my decision leading to impulsive decisions but most of the time I try to think things through.
What strategies do you use to control your feelings? Slow things down and think of the consequences of my decisions before actually making them.
Do they work? Sometimes they work sometimes they don't depend on how strong my emotions are.

Values Case Study-Kindness.

Why don't more people do this?
I personally think people don't this because they don't want to help people but doesn't feel comfortable or doesn't know whether or not to help.

What would the world be like if we all did this?
I think the world will be a happier place where no hate can foster and the world will be full of love.

Personal Identity-Character Strengths

Character Strengths

Do these strengths contribute to your identity?
I definitely think these strengths contribute to my identity since  I'm a Christian and being a Christian means to be humble (Humility), being thankful (gratitude) and having hope in people and the world.

What is it like in DTE?

What had we been learning?
For the past weeks, we had been learning a lot about cyber safety in DTE, knowing the importance of safety and knowing how to be safe. We first created our very own website, customising it to our liking, changing the backgrounds, fonts and layouts. We then quickly started learning about Ergonomics, being safe and efficient when working on your computer for a long time. Then our teacher introduced us to a game that teaches internet safety in an entertaining way called Interland where you go through many levels beating the hacker and internet bullies. After learning a bit about cybersafety we further enhanced our knowledge by creating an infographic all about cyber safety by getting information from the Manaiakalani website. Lastly, we explored different aspects of being on the internet such as being a pioneer, creator, doer, and thinker in digital bytes where we choose one of the four and answer questions about them and do a project based on it.

LEVELS: Reality River "Don't Fall For Fake"
In order to be successful in this game, you are given a task to choose the right answers out of the 3 from a question that is given to you relating to internet safety. Once you get the right answer, you are a given path to get closer to crossing the river.
King Kingdom "It's Cool To Be Kind"
The goal of this game to spread love to sad netizens who had been hurt by internet bullies whilst a the same time rising to the kingdom. There are hearts spread around the map for you to pick and give to sad netizens.

Mindful Mountain "Share With Care"
In order to be successful in this game, you have a task of sharing contents to the right people. To reach the right people you shine a light through a mirror.

Tower of Treasure "Secure your Secrets"
This game's task is to collect online valuables making sure not to drop them to be able to proceed to the next stage. When valuables are dropped hackers would steal it.

What have you learnt?
Since we had been learning about internet safety, I'm more aware of the dangers of the internet, and I'm now informed that everything I do on the internet leaves a footprint so I should be cautious about everything I do online, for example, leaving my personal information like my address, phone number, what school I go to, and parent's name. I also acquired to always analyze the website's name first since it might lead me to a website that wouldn't be pleasing. Safety online isn't the only thing I learnt I also learnt about ergonomics and the importance of your posture,  the height of your computer to your eyes and how you sit. Furthermore, I got more aware of the influence of the internet, especially for younger users and how it affects the way they think so it's necessary to think twice before posting anything. I also got an opportunity to play around with creating a website where I acquired much information in terms of making a banner, background, buttons, links, embedding and adding pictures.

Storked- Connections Tasks

Storked- Connections Tasks

Connection 1: The Baby Box
Baby box in Germany

The baby boxes are insulated boxes that have a warm blanket and an envelop inside that has contacts of people to call in case the parents change their minds, the people working there monitors the "baby box" and get a notification if the box is being opened and the box immediately gets locked, the hatch is where parents can dump their unwanted baby to get adopted. It has spread around Europe and the United States with 200 boxes in total. This practice has been done before in medieval Europe where you can get rid of your child and the hospital fosters them using the community's money.

Connection 2: The Underground Railroad

The Undeground Railroad is a secret association that began in the 1780s where they freed approximately 6000 slaves. Their code names such as "conductor", "lighthouse", "stations", "depot" and "stationmasters" our themes regarding train stations. Most "conductors" pretended to be a slave where they would travel to plantations to lead fugitives to safe houses known as "stations". Harriett Tubman was a former slave that has been saved by the Underground Railroad that later became one of the most well known "conductor" saving 300 slaves in a decade of her serving. The Underground Railroad activities ended when the Civil War began in 1862.

          Connection 3: Suicide Bombers
https://www.bbc.com/news/av/world-middle-east-37216876/yemen-hit-by-suicide-bombing-carnage-in-aden

Like the "clappers" (terrorist group)  in Unwind, they replace their blood with nitroglycerin blend to make it explode like a bomb, setting it off by clapping blowing themselves up and everyone around them, a terrorist bombed a headquarter of a pro-government militia killing 60 people in Yemen by slamming a car into the building killing themselves in the process.

Part Two-Storked

Storked

"You can't change laws without first changing human nature." - Nurse Greta
"You can't change human nature without first changing the law." -Nurse Young

Risa overhears two nurses debating law and human nature. Which argument do you think is stronger? Why do you think this? Write a paragraph explaining your thoughts on law and human nature.
In my opinion, I think Nurse Young's argument was stronger. If there are no laws, everyone would have the freedom to do anything, people have a sinful nature, that leads them to choose the wrong decision, this where laws come to place in order to discipline them so people know how to behave.

This section opens with a mother abandoning her newborn infant on the doorstep of a house in a good neighbourhood. As she leaves, she thinks "How wonderful it is that she can get a second chance. How wonderful it is that she can dismiss her responsibility so easily."  In your opinion, by allowing new mothers to give up their children so readily, does it take away from the value of a child?
No, I don't think it takes away the value of a child because a child's life is priceless, to begin with, life is a gift that you can't give a valuation to.

What is the role of a mother? Do you think the title of mother is something that should be earned, or a natural right of the woman who gave birth?

Once you had given birth to a baby it immediately makes you the biological mother, no matter how much you hate being a mother, your gene is still imprinted to that child, which means it's your responsibility to take care of it to give it food, water, shelter, love and raise it well.

What skills or attributes do Connor and Risa have that work well together?

Connor and Risa are similar in a way that their both independent, brave and bright however they're the complete opposite, Connor thinks spontaneously whilst Risa thinks carefully, which can be an advantage in a way that Risa helps Connor think more responsibly and make careful decisions. Both of them being smart, they can come up with clever plans fast to help them survive.

Connor and Lev have very different experiences with storking. How has this helped shape each of their attitudes toward the society they live in?

Lev's experience with storking has been positive that makes him think it's something that always has a good outcome whilst Connor's experience is nothing but bad, blaming himself to what happened leading him to think about the feelings of other and empathetic.

Connor is concerned the baby won't be loved, and ultimately will die, so he takes it. What does this show us about him as a person?
It shows that Connor is very considerate, and sensitive about a person's feeling even if it's baby. It also shows that Connor doesn't want anyone to go through the same experience his family went through.

What makes Lev realise he doesn't want to be unwound? P79
Pastor Dan, the man he looks up to and respects highly, places him back to his senses to convince Lev that it isn't right to unwind and there are no such things as tithes and sacrificing a human.

Each of the other characters on the run has a tragic background story. Why were Hayden, Roland and Mai set to be unwound? Which, do you think, is the most tragic? Explain your response.

Hayden's parents didn't want each other to take him so they decided to unwind him instead. Roland took revenge on his stepfather for abusing his mother but it ends up to his mother siding with his stepfather. Mai's parents didn't want a girl so her parents wanted to unwind her.

All their stories are very sad but I think Roland's was the most tragic, the feeling of betrayal. Someone you risked your life for because of love still chose the person that's hurting them, instead of you, the one who is shielding them from getting damaged, is one of the worst feelings.

What tattoo does Roland have?

He has a shark tattooed on his forearm

Harriett Tubman

Who is Hariett Tubman and what is she famous for?
What I found interesting?
What I found interesting is how they use code names for their safehouses and helpers like the "lighthouse" and "conductors".

What I already knew?
I had no idea about anything to do with slavery before getting introduced to the Underground Railroad.

What I want to learn?
I want to learn more about the other "conductors".

Why Harriet Tubman was an important figure?
She inspires slaves to fight for their freedom and also help others in need.

Part One-Triplicate

Triplicate

"I was never going to amount to much anyway, but now, statistically speaking, there's a better chance that some part of me will go on to greatness somewhere in the world. I'd rather be partly great than entirely useless." -Samson Ward

How much brainwashing do you think has happened for teenagers to make this sort of claim as they’re being led to their "death"?
A lot since they have been convinced to be still alive but living in a divided state.

Why, do you think, has Shusterman chosen to have three characters tell their story?
He chose to have three characters that have different backgrounds to get three different points of views. Connor, being an unwind due to the reason of him misbehaving. Risa the perfect unfostered child that still got chosen to be an unwind due to people thinking she reached her potential. Lev the child who knows he's getting unwind and believes it right because it was written in the bible.

Lev is a tithe. This means that he is the 10% that his family will give back to the church as an offering. What are your thoughts on this?
Coming from a Christian point of view, I don't think it's right to sacrifice a child as an offering for the church. Number three of the ten commandments is "Thou shalt not kill" and offering your child is basically giving your child for you someone to kill which make you an accomplice.

Rita is a state home kid - she was unwanted at birth, and now the state has decided she is no longer useful. Do you think that the state should ever be able to determine if one life is more useful than another?
The state should never get to determine if a persons life is more useful than the other, everyone was made to have an impact on the earth, they don't have the right to rate and compare people's live, it is theirs and they should be the only one who can determine if it's useful or not.

Connor's parents have chosen to unwind him due to his difficult behaviour. They have then booked a ticket to the Bahamas. In your opinion, how do parents view their children? Why do you think this?
Parents view their children as an appliance that they use to entertain them once it's faulty they dispose of it to get detached. The parents wanted to have kids to entertain them, watching them grow up, being cute, and showing affection but once they reached the age when their behaviours start to get difficult they decide to unwind their child (Connor).

Pastor Dan presents as being conflicted. What reasons might he have to encourage Lev in his journey as a tithe?
He knew deep in his heart that what Lev's parents are doing is wrong, he might've believed that no kid should be sacrificed and the tithing ritual is nonsense.
Why does he encourage him to run? He wants to prevent Lev from getting unwind.
What is the story based on a nursery rhyme that circulates among the youth?
Humphrey Dunfee an urban legend created to spook children. The story is about Humphrey's parents feeling remorse about unwinding him so they decided to put him back together by finding pieces of him.
