Notes
Settings:
Cornucopia-Where the contestant started the game and where you can get the loots from.
District12- The houses looked low maintenance (broken windows, chipped walls, etc.) Uses old school technology.
Capitol- Seeing a lot of Affluence, the Capitol looked high maintenance containing, tall modern looking buildings, also being clean and tidy and have advanced technology.
Penthouse-Compared to Katniss house the penthouse was high tech and clean. It also had electricity.
Training Grounds-This was where the tributes trained their strength, agility, speed, accuracy etc. The colour used was (dark, grey, black, and red) and lighting was also dark,
Control Room- The room is very bright and futuristic, the colour palette of the room is clean mostly consisted of white and blue that usually associated with clinics and hospitals.
Arena-(Woods) The hunger games had a similar setting to where the audience saw Katniss at the start.
Shots and Angle:
Birdseye view- Where it shows the children walking over to the stage.
Medium shot-It was used when Katniss was shooting with a bow.
Two shot- It shows Katniss and Gale talking on the mountain.
Point of view-During one of the scenes, where Katniss climbed up the tree for safety she was looking down on Cato’s squad.
Long Shot- It was used to show the capitol.
Over the shoulder shot- It was used during the time Effie pulled out an envelope and started revealing the first tribute. That makes the audience feel they're are part of it.
Extreme long shot- This shot is used to show the arena.
Close up shot- To show Primrose’s reaction and emotion after dreaming about herself getting picked by the capitol to join the hunger games. They use close up shot throughout the movie to create the atmosphere instead of relying on the music.
Medium long shot- This shot was used during the parade to showcase how many people attended the event.
Dutch Tilt-It was first shown when Katniss volunteered to show the audience that something is not quite right. It was also shown Katniss was finally lifted up to the cornucopia it shows a dutch tilt showing the audience how disoriented Katniss was at the moment.
Low Angle- It was used during one of the girls in district 2, about to kill Katniss, it shows that she controlled the fight.
High Angle- The scene when Katniss and Gale were looking up on what's up on the sky making them seem vulnerable.
Shaky camera- This camera shot isn't t stable, purposely making it seem someone holding it without any tripod.
Panning shot- At the wilderness to show how people at the district 12 are isolated
Wide angle shot- To show how many people were at the reaping.
Tracking Shot- When the game started this shot was used when Katniss was running away from the cornucopia.
Extreme Close up- It was used during the Katniss's attempt to shoot the apple bag. The shot was closed upon her lips to show the details of her nails, arrow, and lips showing how she was nervous, breathing in and out.
Themes:
Survival
Symbol:
Mocking Jay Pin- First time it was shown was when Katniss was bantering with the old lady. For Katniss, the Mocking Jay symbolises protection and hope. It also symbolises rebellion to the capitol.
Three finger salute- It’s a symbol to show gratitude, admiration or saying goodbye used by the people from District 12. It 'also the start of the rebellion after Rue's death.
Primrose tucked in her shirt indicating she needed to grow up since her sister usually does it for her.
Girl on fire- It was started to during the parade of the districts. Second, you see it embodied in Katniss's costume was during the interview before the hunger games started.
White Roses- Associated with President Snow.
Props:
Weapons- like Katniss’s bow and arrow.
Food- To show how rich the capitol is, feeding their contestant. (The Train and Penthouse)
In district 12 it shows a character
Technology- District 12
Alcohol- Prop associated with Hamich indicating he is an alcoholic.
Costume:
The rich people in the capitol wore bright futuristic clothes or clothes you would see on the runway also wearing colourful in your face makeup for example Effie. Showing how rich they are Juxtapose of district 12.
We can see this extravagance with the use of costume, make and hairstyle.
Gender diversity in clothing.
People at district 12 wore plain neutral coloured clothes more like older style articles of clothing. Telling the audience that district 12 was very poor.
The outfit both Katniss and Peta wore was special compared to the other districts to stand out and get sponsors. It stood out due to their costume lighting up on fire.
Music:
Music to transition to another shot.
Intense music- This use of music to create an anxious atmosphere to get the audience on their feet.
Music wasn't used much at the start of the movie instead colour and facial expression are used to the set the atmosphere.
At the start no background music was used at the start, only nature or sound at the background was heard focusing on what the characters were saying.
Music was parsley used.
During the showcase Katniss missed the shot, this was when high-pitched fast-paced music played creating tension.
When the game started, no music from the actual shot was heard but intense violin music.
During Rue's passing sad music was playing in the background to set the mood.
Sometimes there is no music to show raw emotion.
Music was used when Katniss was looking for Peeta, the music was put in to place to create tension or excitement.

Wigs-Effie Trinket wore various hairstyle indicating she wears wigs, telling the audience how rich she is.

Katniss had a flashback on how she knew Peta, the scene where Peta gave bread when she was hungry. That helped us established their relationship in the past.
