This also makes the film seem more natural.

ESTABLISHING
Points to discuss:
(Note: they use a different meaning for tone in this clip.)
What is an establishing shot?
An establishing is a shot that shows an overview of a setting and shows the relationship between the subject and the location.
Why is it used?
It is used to establish a new location and tone.
Why are establishing shot usually the most expensive?
Since it's a shot that shows a landscape, it needs to be far in order to get the whole shot in. This means that either a drone, helicopter or any device that can be taken up on the sky is required, these are usually more expensive.

TONE
What else can we call tone in film?
The brightness of the scene.
What are the 3 main elements of tone?
Lighting, Exposure and Art Direction
How and why does Coppola use tone in the classic film ‘The Godfather’?
He utilised the technique of tone to show the contrast between the mafias and the wedding. While the mafia's set was underexposed and barely seen by the audience, the wedding scene was juxtaposed to it. It was brightly lit filled with many bright colours to show the glee.
How can directors control the feelings of the scenes?
By applying tone as a technique easily manipulates the feeling of the scene. By simply turning the brightness down totally alters the atmosphere, it can serve an ominous, oppressive scene. This can be the same with a bright scene, instead of turning the brightness down, turning it the opposite way instantly changes how the audience feel the gloomy feeling can turn into a joyful one.

FILM COLOUR
How does colour in the film affect people?
It can give them different emotions from a variety of hues. Blue gives a gloomy feel while yellow brings happiness to the watchers.
What are the 3 factors in determining colour?
Hue. Brightness. Saturation
Why is the hue in ‘The Matrix’ mostly green?
Green is associated with codes. Since the movie is inside a digital matrix this fits perfectly well with the film.
Why do some films desaturate?
This could give an old worn-out feel to the scene and transport the audience back to the past. This is due to the drained colours, painting a cold, gritty and rude
What can brightness and a lack of brightness show in a film?
Bright imagery is supposed to deliver a lively and exciting vibe to the film. On the other hand, darker images give the audience more dramatic vibes.

Contrast
What are the ways directors can contrast in film?
In tone, art direction, blocking, camera movement and colour.
What is contrasted in Spike Jonze’s ad?
The beginning started with the subject surrounded by dark colours such as clothing around her. The scene was desaturated and lack of colours can be clearly seen.
Around the end, the brightness slowly turned up revealing more of the character's face and colour around her. You could also see her swapping her dark jacket to a bright, white shirt.
Why did he contrast these things?
This can help with the advertisement and selling of the product. If the subject is shown changing from miserable and amidst of dark colour to the brightness up, filling her with colour seamlessly can easily convince the audience that this product is what they need to be happy.

CAMERA MOVEMENT
What are the purposes of the whip pan and the slow pan?
The whip pan creates a jolt of energy, while the slow pan gives the audience more time to take in the landscape.
What is the purpose of the tilt shot?
It often reveals something to the audience and redirects their attention.
What does the reverse dolly zoom help show?
To show characters having an intense internal experience.
What the difference between a Steadicam and dolly shot?
A Steadicam is still a handheld camera with a stabilizer while the dolly shot is a camera technique that uses tracks to follow the character.
What can the hand-held shot help create for the viewer?
It creates more anxiety for the viewers.
What should directors ask themselves with their camera movement?
How does this support your story?

Camera movement should be doing what?
To have a purpose behind it that will help with the story.

INSERT SHOT
What is an insert shot?
An insert shot is an isolated shot that focuses on specific detail within the scene
What is the purpose of an insert shot?
To communicate crucial narrative information.

English-Creative Writing

Have you ever anticipated a night so much, that it could be your last? It was the blonde-headed girl’s most anticipated evening of all, The Formal. The sun was asleep and the moon’s time to shine. Amber gazed outside her window waiting for a certain car to gracefully take her to La La Land. Instead, the scene of a scrawny man with his untrimmed beard came into view. His chocolate eyes were like a spinning spiral, hypnotising The girl. She couldn’t take her attention away from the man stabbing a log with an axe. “Amber!” her mother shouted in a sing-song voice. Amber turned around. The door slowly opened its mouth. It revealed her mother with her signature red lips, carrying a plate of sliced cake. Amber gave her mother a grin only to get her retreating back.

As she patted her pink dress to get rid of the crease, the sound of glass shattering was heard by the entrance. Crash, the small window by the door was no longer intact. Crash, another window has been left to pieces. Crash, a peacefully sat glass are now thorns, waiting to dig through her milky skin. Amber’s brain mirrored her facial distraught. The tension in her body slowly rushed to her head. Her vision has started to betray her. All she could see was darkness with specks of bright lights, switching on and off. She held onto the smooth velvet couch, for support.

She tiptoed to the scene of the crime and peaked on the small ajared window. Her pulse quickened. The street was deserted but one car was parked in front of her house, illuminating a shadow. She recognised the black Lexus, it was her dad’s. The man she knew well strolled on the perfectly shaped path. Loudly, she yelled for help. Her father gazed her way and scrunched his eyebrows. Seeing the distress in his daughter’s blue eyes, the man in the suit bolted to the door. His keys were jingling in alarm. As he was still struggling with the clump of metal in his hands, a shadow had blocked the faint light of the street lamp. It casted a silhouette of a man holding a sharp weapon. Simultaneously Amber had rushed to the huge wooden door. Her vibrating hands slowly reached for the round knob. Whack! A metal object sliced down the mahogany. The red liquid from the axe dripped down on their marbled floor.

Still, in her state of hysteria, her eyes grew big and she raced to the kitchen in a panic. The smell of freshly baked cake still lingered with a hint of the rotten smell. Headed to the back, a trail of thick blood led to the opened door and there was her mother. The woman laid there lifeless on her own pool of blood, her face didn’t plaster the same smile, instead, it was empty. The wind slapped her face but she felt numb. Amber’s distress transformed into anger.

Stealthily, she retorted back to the entrance. She put one foot forward and scanned the yard. A shining metal covered in blood piqued her interest, an axe. As if it’s warning anyone nearby, her high heels marched on the street, echoing. She spotted the same wrinkled man from earlier. With her eyebrows scrunched and fist tightly together, she swung the murderous object mercilessly. Her tongue tasted metal. The neatly ironed dress was now covered in spots of blood. Her perfectly applied makeup was now decorated with evidence.

Behind her house, she dispatched the body. As she looked at her reflection on the glass, she fixed her hair, putting on the brightest smile she could foster. BEEP. BEEP. Her carpool has arrived. She strutted down the same path of her father’s death ground. She waved at her friends like it was just a normal night. She got into the brightly lit limo that’s been filled by a strong scent of alcohol. Amber looked outside the tinted glass that made her eyes widened. A man. A man was standing in front of her lawn. The same one her mother and father witnessed.

Chop Suey

During yesterday's practical, we ensured that we limited the chance of contamination by segregating the ingredients in separate bowls, especially the meat and the vegetables. By doing this, we avoided cross-contamination and keeping bacterias from different foods to join each other. This can be transferred by the juice on the food or physical contact.

After collecting the vegetables such as corn, peas, carrots and spring onion, we immediately rinsed it with water and chopped it on the green board. By rinsing it, washes out sprays, bacterias and dirt from the vegetables.

When it comes to the meat we used tongs to avoid any bacteria from our hands or the meat itself from exchanging. A different chopping board (red) is also utilised to avoid any bacterias, transferring from the already rinsed vegetables.
