Bridge Design

How To Make A Strong Bridge Out Of Paper

The only material we can use are 4 sheets of newspaper and 1 m tape.

Reffering to the movie ''Boss Baby'' it said that the strongest shape is triangle.

We will be trying to re-create this model by folding the sides of the newspaper in a triangle shape and use tape instead of paper clips.

We decided to change the model that we orginaly have in mind because the newspaper wasn't as strong as paper so we tried to roll the newspaper and put it on top of each other.

The picture that we had inpiration from.
Results:
We can't compare it to the other model we did because we didn't test the other one.
The bridge turned out to be better than I thought, It held 50 kg.

Can Opener

CAN OPENER
After waking up from a deep sleep you feel famished, so you decided to prepare yourself a toast with can baked beans. Having the can in front of you, you realised that you require an object to open it with, so you rummage through your drawers to look for a can opener. While trying to open the can you wonder…. How does a can opener work?

What is a can opener?
A can opener is a tool that helps us open cans more efficiently. It consists of three simple machines: a wheel and axle, lever, and a wedge. The two metal arms that are pressed onto the can are levers. The handle that is use to rotate is a wheel and axle. Lastly the wheel that cuts the can open is the wedge. It is a way that is easier and not having to use other resources like knives that would slip if it didn’t get handled carefully. I believe that can openers are important and can help our lives more than we expect.

How does a can opener work?
When using a can opener the first thing to do is apply the arms to the can by tightly compressing it together, that causes the serrated wheels grip into the can. Then start turning the handles, turning the handle(which acts as an axle) causes the serrated wheel to rotate and move the cutter blade across the top of the can that cuts it. A lot of force is needed to keep the cutter down. The cutting blade needs to be stronger than the lid of the can in order for it to work.

How does it cut?
Pretend squishing a butter into your hand. The butter has to move out of the way so it goes out sideways while it gets flattened. However when using a thinner material to cut like the blade on a can opener, the edge is thinner so the pressure(Having the right amount of force to move something)is higher and easier to push through.

How does this simple machine make life easier?
Without having a can opener in everyday life, it makes our lives more difficult by trying to open cans with different resources that can be dangerous like knives, scissors, and other sharp objects.

Now you know how a can opener works,It is fascinating to know how a machine works and realised how complex it is. In summary a can opener works by applying a lot grip on a handle that turns the blade. Also the blade cuts by the pressure.

High Impact -> Car Race Result

What did we do?
Firstly we all had 5 minutes to make changes and modify our car to suit the race. The first race we did was to test which car is the fastest, Miss Richardson is at the bottom of the ramp knealing with her phone on the ground to time us, we went in order of the number of our cars. Next race was the the closest to the green line this time 3 cars go at the same time. Last was the furthest race, everyone had to move out of the way of the way so the car doesn't stop because of them. How was it fair? It was a fair test because we all had the choice of setting the ramp in an angle of our preference also having 5 minutes to modify at the same time and same materials and car.

My 3 Different Modifiactions Of The Car
First

This is our first modifitcation for the first race. We added clay in front so it          has a balanced force with the back and have more gravity acting in front to          increase acceleration. Also we made a spoiler out clay to have down force          which helps it keep the car on the ground and be stable. Sadly car number                                                    6 won the race having 0.87 seconds but we came close with 1.01 second.

 Second
The second was stopping at the green light. We had an idea of adding rubber bands to the car to have friction and slow it down we also kept the clay in front and the spoiler. We are the triumph of the race, we went with number 9 and 10 we came close with number 10 but the second go, number 9 went off the green line.

Third
The third race we did was the furthest, we made a mohawk shaped clay to have aerodynamic and make it go faster and further. We didn't do as good as we did with other races with thid design, we only got

The Results

Our car was good and didn't do as bad as I thougth however it wasn't good enought to win the furthest and fastest. Overall I'm satisfied with the results because we did win on the test of being the closest to the green light.

The Job I'm Researching Is A Geologist

What Is A Geologist?
Geologist is a career  that studies rocks and mineral to know how earthquakes, landslides, floods, and volcanic eruptions happen.

1.What training do you need for that career?
To have geologist as a job you required to have a bachelor's degree. Some city requires a license, to get a license you need a to take a fundemental of geology exam. After collecting, they observe what it contains.

2. What do you do for an average day on the job?
They travel to diffent parts of the world to collect fossils, minerals and rock samples also measure the physical properties of the world.

Vortex Cannon

Vortex Cannon

Aim: To modify our vortex(change the shape and size) to see how far it shoots.
Equipment: Bucket,  Rubbish bag, and tape.
Method:We are not making a ordinary homemade vortex using a cardboard. Instead we are using a bucket. First we tape a piece of rubbish bag tightly on top of the bucket(this acts like the side of the cardboard where you  squeeze it)
Results: When we tested our vortex, we started off in a 3 metre line. After one of my partner smacked the vortex on the rubbish side the row of cup barely moved. The best vortex in our class made it to 3 metres in two smack.
Discussion:If we do it again, I would change the size into  a smaller hole. I think that the smaller hole would make it further because there's a lot of air trying to get out.

The Physics of Car Racing

The  Physics of Car Racing

1.What has been done to make this a 'fair test'?
We all had the same type of model car to start off with. Also we are racing our cars in the same track and the same materials to use.

2.What forces are needed to make the car go faster and how you modified your car accrodingly?
We added rock and clay to increase the gravity to make it go faster. The gravity pushes the car down on a angle which accelerate it.

3.What forces are needed to make the car stop and what adjustment have you made to try and stop it by the line? We added rubber bands and wrapped it around the car to make it bumpy have more friciton.

4.What forces are needed to make the car travel further and what adjustments have you made to achieve this? To have more acceleration but less gravity. So we took the rock off so there's not much gravity as before. We still need a little bit of weight on top of the car so it's balanced and won't be able to flip so we kept the clay.

Wind

Wind

Why does wind exist/What drives the wind?
As  global warming gets hotter, the atmosphere get warmer too. Some section of the Earth have direct rays of sun all year round and are always warm. However other parts of the Earth don't get direct sun rays, therefore the tempreture is colder. Warmer air which weigh less than cold air rises. As for the cool air, it moves to find a place warmer and replace the warm air. The movement of the cold air is what make wind move.

What are the effects of wind?
Good:

  •  Helps grow trees.
  • Drives the wind turbine.
  • Make waves to clean the ocean.
Bad:
  • Tornado
  • Sand dunes
Pictures and Videos of the experiment we did base on wind:

Car

  1. What problems does  our car already have?
  •  It turns when landed on the flat ground. (We can make the front part heavier because the car’s back is heavier. So it has a balance force)
  • Sometimes it does a flip. (adjust the angle of the ramp. 150 degrees)

2.How do you think will make your car go faster?
To make the car heavier so there's more gravity pushing it down the ramp.

3.How do you think you will slow your car down?
Put sand paper just before the end of the green lign.

4.What equipment will we need?
  • Stone
  • Sandpaper.
  • Clay
  • rubber mands

When we placed the rock in the middle of the car it flippped so we decided to move it more forward, the first try it did it perfectly but the second try flipped again. It isn'y accurate maybe we could try a different strategy.

We decided to modify the car by putting rubber bands in the middle of the car so it has more friction so it can slow down.

The Physics Of Tug Of War(Friction)

Carpet
Concrete
Grass
Lino

Prediction:
I believe that out of all of them Carpet or concrete will have the most friction because the surface is rough and  have lot of grip. So it will be the easiest to play tug of war first. Lino will be harder because it smooth and easy to slip in. Grass depends on the weather, wether it's wet or dry. Wet grass will be slippery because of the mud but dry grass will be easier to play because the grass is helping us grip.

Conclusion:
What did I find out?
I discovered that the carpet is the best for tug of war. I had a lot grip while pulling the rope. Based on my experience on the experiment I think that the most friction is the carpet and the least is the grass because it was slippery.

How was it a fair test?
The same people participated and did the same thing that we did for every ground that we tested.

Something I'm wondering.
Why does bumpy surface have the most friction.

Carpet:

Concrete:

Grass:

Lino:

What is a simple machine?

What is a simple machine?

  • A machine is a system that changes the relationship between effort (the force applied) and load (the weight lifted or moved)
  • Machines make our lives easier.
  • Machines help us to lift, push, pull, turn, cut & join things.
  • Wheels, rollers, levers, gears, and pulleys all make it easier to move a heavy load by reducing friction or magnifying forces.

Kete High Impact-Push and Pull

We have been learning Push and Pull forces.
I found out that the forces have to be balance for an object to stay in place.
Something I am wondering about is what if the world has less gravity.
